A business listing service is a way of advertising a business. The business listing service is usually in the form of a printed directory or a website. A business listing service can be divided by geographic region or industry specific or often both. An online business listing service has the added benefit of functionality which enables the user to enter search criterion and therefore obtain lists of business specific to their requirements.

Sometimes a business listing service will be free and some are paid for, this often depends on the type of listing required. This is both in terms the number of and quality of the visitors to the website.

When considering using a business listing service it is important to make sure that your business is listed in the most appropriate category and that your advertisement will stand out from those of your competitors who will be listing in the same directory. It may often be better to try a free listing first and see what results are obtained before going ahead with a paid for listing. A business listing service must give good return on investment to advertisers.

Before going ahead with a business listing service always think about how appropriate it is to you target market, is it a media that your target market are likely to use to find a supplier like your company? For example if you consider an online business listing service then think about how many of your potential customers have regular access to the internet and and if this is likely to be the medium they would use to find services.
