Glossary of Terms - Company Logo

The word logo is short for logotype a, phrase that was derived from the printing process before mechanical typesetting was commonly used. A company logo is a graphical symbol or icon that represents a given business, product, service or organisation. The logo has certain unchanging characteristics such as a symbol, colours, a typeface and wording. A typical company logo would consist of a combination of these elements and is designed to cause immediate recognition by the viewer. Along with this recognition the company logo should also evoke an understanding of what the company does, how it does it and what it stands for.

The company logo is a central and key element in developing a company as a brand. As the company logo is designed to be a representative symbol of the company it is associated with, the company logo should be present on all communication materials that the company produces including letterheads, business cards, advertising, brochures & leaflets and the website.

A good company logo will usually have the following attributes:

  • Distinctive
  • It should adhere to accepted design principles
  • Representative of the company
  • Easy to use in all required circumstances, i.e. large or small, black or white, online or offline, etc

Because of this the company logo of a large or high profile business is frequently trade marked to prevent other companies from attempting to copy any aspect of it. The creative process to create a company logo would really not differ that much from that the creation of a logo for a brand, service, organisation or product. The most important aspect in the process would be for the designer to understand what product or service the company provided and how it differed from its competitors.
