Glossary of Terms - Design

Design is a term usually associated with a creative process involving origination and development. The term design which relates to the process of origination or development can be associated with a wide range of industries, products and services such as interiors, garden, architecture, industrial, engineering and graphics. In the context of e-Moonlighting, design means graphic design.

Graphic design itself includes a wide range of design functions but with the emergence of over the last two decades of the world wide web, design functions can be divided into two broad categories, design for print and web design.

Design for print would include logo design, stationery, brochures, leaflets, advertisements for magazines and newspapers, posters and direct mail pieces. As well as the design of websites, web design would also include banner advertisements, etc. These separate design disciplines are often specialist areas but some designers do have the training and capability to undertake both types of design.

The design process itself usually involves several stages, the first of these would be to think up concepts which can be evolved into actual designs. The next stage is to produce basic designs for each of the creative concepts that were originally developed. These designs are then subjected to opinion and feedback from the various involved parties such as the clients and other design agency staff. Following this process some design work will be eliminated and deemed not suitable for further development. The designs, which were favoured are then furthered developed until one final design, is approved by all parties.

High quality design work is an important element in the success of any business and can be particularly important to a new business. Good design will give the business the impression of being established and people with whom it is safe to do business with. It was also begin the process of establishing a business as a brand. The key aspects of good design are excellent creative concepts, visual imagery, typography, layout and colour usage.
