Glossary of Terms - Search Engine Optimisation

Search engine optimisation is a term that refers to the process of obtaining the best possible position on the search engines for a website. The three most important search engines are generally agreed to be Google, MSN and Yahoo. Most search engine optimisation strategies usually primarily target Google.

A variety of measures are required for effective search engine optimisation and this must be considered right from the time that the design and planning of the website commences. The website itself should be constructed html and there should be no images under the copy. When writing the copy a key term should be selected for at least four pages and that term should be included at least three times in the copy – without adversely effecting the flow or content of the copy. Meta titles should then be added to these four pages only. The website should also have a website map, which for best effect should be XML.

The website should be submitted to the three main search engines at least, although the benefit of multiple submissions to these engines is now doubtful for search engine optimisation. The website should also be submitted to the relevant section of the Open Directory.

Probably the most important aspect of search engine optimisation is links, both link exchanges and direct one way links to a website. The most effective means of obtaining one way links to your website is by submitting it to the many free directories, inclusion in these is an excellent way of search engine optimisation for Google in particular. Link exchanges with websites of content relevant to your own, with high levels of traffic and good Google page ranking is also valuable for search engine optimisation.

It is also advisable to list on one of the main paid directories such as yahoo.com or botw.com, neither is expensive. The other key factor in search engine optimisation is to keep the content of your website fresh, up to date and interesting. A professionally designed website of course also helps and will certainly make life a lot easier when seeking link exchanges, etc.
