Glossary of Terms - Websites / Web A website is a collection of web pages that can be accessed via a common root URL. The index page of a website is usually called the Home Page and it is from this page that the user can navigate and arrive at the other pages of the website. Some websites also use a splash page which appears when a user first logs on to the website, the splash page usually consists of a graphic display designed to increase interest in the website. Websites are usually written in html and hosted on website servers. All websites use a URL domain name which is unique address via which the website can be located on the World Wide Web e.g. www.e-Moonlighting.co.uk. The World Wide Web is the network of all websites accessible in the world. Websites are used for a wide range of purposes including commercial, information, personal, promotional, etc. Some websites offer information for free and others are based on subscription in order to view information or use the services. E-commerce websites have become more successful as more people have regular access to the internet and e-commerce websites have taken trade away from the high street, an example of this would be Amazon.co.uk. Website quality is particularly important to online businesses who use the website as their main place of business. To these businesses a well designed website and a website that is optimised for maximum search engine results are the factors that often decide the success or failure of the business. Website optimisation is the process by where a website aims to obtain the maximum amount of traffic (in hits, visits and page impressions) from the various search engines. A website is very important to a small or medium sized business, it enables the business to establish its credentials online and as part of a package of overall marketing and search engine optimisation measures a website can be a valuable means of winning new customers. |
