Glossary of Terms - Website Design

A website is a collection of web pages that can be accessed via a common root URL. The index page of a website is usually called the Home Page and it is from this page that the user can navigate and arrive at the other pages of the website. Website design could be defined as the development of a website in terms of website map, design concepts, page layout, copywriting, typography and build.

There are three key elements to successful website design:

Design quality – good layout, consistency, professional design, clear & uncluttered, relevant imagery, interesting, pages produced html.

Ease of use – make website navigation clear and easy, avoid pages and graphics that are slow to load as visitors may not wait – this is particularly true for splash intro pages.

Copy & content – make copy clear & concise, have the correct amount of copy on each page and lay the copy out to make it easy to read.

The other main factor to consider with website design is search engine optimisation. Good website design for effective search engine optimisation will include writing copy with the correct key word density and using headers suitable for meta titles. The website design may also include a links exchange page and a glossary of terms to improve search engine rankings however these features would not be suitable for all websites.

Website design will be influenced largely by the purpose of the website and its target audience. An e-commerce website design will be very different in format to a website that is designed as an online brochure or a source of information. Website design is a very specialist and technical business, often the design of a website will involve a number of different skills including copywriting, designing, technical input and programming and building.
